Planning
Our theme this half-term is ‘Superheroes!’
We will be beginning this theme by looking at Superheros that the children know and enjoy watching in films and reading about in books. We will then move onto looking at real-life superheroes such as: the police, fire service, doctors and nurses, vets. This will also include a visit from the Police and a nurse.
We will also learn about festivals and celebrations that happen during this half term, such as:
- Shrove Tuesday (25th February)
- Ash Wednesday & the beginning of Lent (26th February)
- St David’s Day (1st March)
- World Book Day (5th March)
- St Patrick’s Day (17th March)
- World Poetry Day (21st March)
- Mothers Day (22nd March) & Easter.
Have a look at the stories we are reading this theme:
Phonics – Read Write Inc
At Holy Rosary we use the Read Write Inc (RWI) programme . Read Write Inc Phonics is a method of teaching reading and writing, which is centred around learning the sounds of the letters (phonics) and then blending them together to read words. The children also learn to break down words into individual sounds in order to write them.
The children in EYFS are assessed by the RWI manager and are grouped according to their ability.
They work in small groups with teachers and teaching assistants every day to learn to read and write new sounds.
At the end of each half term the children will be assessed again to check they have made progress and will be grouped again.
The sounds are taught in a certain order and with rhymes to match the letters.
