History

Subject Statement of Intent

At Holy Rosary we aim to offer a high-quality history education that will help children gain a coherent knowledge and understanding of Britain’s past and that of the wider world. It is intended to inspire children’s curiosity to know more about the past. Teaching of History should equip children to ask perceptive questions, think critically, weigh evidence, sift arguments, and develop perspective and judgement. Through the teaching of History we endeavour to teach children to understand the complexity of people’s lives, the process of change, the diversity of societies and relationships between different groups.

We aim for all children to:

  • Know and understand the history of the UK as a chronological narrative
  • Know how people’s lives have shaped the UK and how Britain has influenced and been influenced by the wider world
  • Know and understand significant aspects of the history of the wider world, e.g. ancient civilisations and empires from around the world
  • Understand historical concepts such as continuity and change, cause and consequence, similarity, difference and significance
  • Understand the methods of historical enquiry, including how evidence is used to make historical claims, and understand how and why contrasting arguments and interpretations of the past have been constructed.

Implementation

What Do We Teach?

History is taught at least once per term in each class. We implement a curriculum that is progressive throughout the whole school, focusing on knowledge and skills stated in the National Curriculum and ensuring that coverage of the National Curriculum is complete. In Foundation Stage, History is taught through Knowledge and Understanding of the World. The teaching of History allows opportunities for cross curricular links to be made to ensure the children have many occasions whereby they can apply their knowledge and understanding.  History lessons focus on developing historical skills and children working as historians. We intend for children to gain real life experiences to aid their historical skills e.g.  Year 1 theme ‘Toys past and present’ looking at changes within living memory & Year 2 ‘Local History’ focusing on changes in school and Oldham. Teachers also try to plan school trips linked to History themes they have covered to aid learning outside the classroom.

The History curriculum at Holy Rosary is based upon the National Curriculum, which provides a broad framework and outlines the knowledge taught in each Key Stage. Teachers plan lessons for their class using our progression of key knowledge document. Teachers can use this document to plan their history lessons suitable to their class’s interests. The progression document ensures the curriculum is covered and the skills/knowledge taught is progressive from year group to year group. Teachers prepare a knowledge organiser at the start of each theme to support their teaching.  Classes also have a Rapid Recall quiz weekly to recap on previous learning and vocabulary.

At Holy Rosary we aim for children to become more aware of how historical events have shaped the world that they currently live in. Through historical skills taught in school children will become increasingly critical and analytical within their thinking, making informed and balanced judgments based on their knowledge of the past. We also aim for children to be able to retain prior-learning and make connections between what they have previously learned and what they are currently learning.

Assessment

Teachers understand the impact of knowing where their children are, through weekly and termly assessments and use this to move learning forward and close any gaps. This is done through weekly quizzes, anchor tasks and frequent marking of children’s work. They also understand where their children need to be, through a secure understanding of the year group expectations and previous learning expectations.

The History lead also has the opportunity to monitor History on a termly basis, ensuring the quality of teaching and learning is taking place. The History lead also has the opportunity to monitor History on a termly basis, ensuring the quality of teaching and learning is taking place.
