RSHE - Relationships, Sex and Health Education |
|
"Education is about more than academic achievements. Schools seek to prepare our young people for life in the world today. Their health and wellbeing and their relationships with others are vital componenents for living a fulfilled life and making positive contributions to society. So, not surprisingly, Relationships Education, Sex Education and Health Education (RSHE) are an essential part of the overall school curriculum and the Government, through its Department of Education, regulates the content of those aspects of the curriculum. Within the Catholic Church, we have a particular context in which we wish this education to be offered and specific views about certain elements of it. Consequently, on behalf of the Bishops' Conference of England and Wales, the Catholic Education Service (CES) offers advice and a model policy for how this area of the curriculum should be approached in Catholic schools. Our own Diocesan Department for Education has taken both the Government and the CES documents and brought them together into a model policy for the use in schools withoin the Diocese of Salford. This ensures that Catholic teaching is set alongside the secular State requirements and will enable teachers to approach these often sensitive matters with confidence and clarity." Our mission statement which drives the school, attempts to achieve this goal following the Gospel values of truth and respect, understanding our journey as children of God, both special and unique.
Central to our work within our school is learning about our faith, including understanding ourselves, our position in our community and how we develop as human beings – our spiritual, social, emotional and physical development. This is how 'Ten:Ten - Life to the full plus' fits in to the school’s curriculum. Ten:Ten - Life to the full plus permeates through all levels of learning throughout the school and is part of all that we do. It's aim is to support school in the nurturing of children's spiritiual growth, personal development and understanding social responsibility through the a Catholic lens. |
|
Ten:Ten - Life to the full plus is the recommended programme of work for Salford Diocese. The content is age appropriate and is taught with sensitivity, taking into account the children's level of mauturity in regards to the delivery of the lessons. Ten:Ten - Life to the full plus is designed in a progressive manner which builds on prior knowledge. As children progress through school they discover more and more about themselves abd the wider world. This thirst for learning new things in all aspects of life is fostered by school, who attempt to create a safe, stimulating environment for learning, supporting all children in their development.
As with all aspects of learning, children are naturally curious and many will have questions related to their lessons. Opportunities to discuss questions form part of the lessons and again these are treated with care and understanding.
As a parent, you have the right to withdraw your child from Sex Education at any time if you wish to do so however, this is not to be confused with units of work around growing and life cycles within the Science curriculum which is a statutory requirement. |
Ten:Ten - Life to the full plus programme content:RSHE is taught descretly, weekly, throughout the whole of the year. Learning within the subject area also takes place within other lessons (such as Science - life cycles, PE - being healthy and exercise). The programme of work is arangred into three modules for the year and each module is organised into units of works. Each term, a new module is taught. All modules begin with the Religious Understanding unit of work. This ensures that all teaching is rooted in the Catholic faith, including a Bible story which teaching will be linked.
